Christmas and the new year is always a great time to catch up with friends and family, stuff yourself senseless with festive goodies and have a drink or three!
After the new year’s eve parties, celebrations, dancing and recovery, we often ponder the new year and how we want to live it. What will 2012 bring for you…?
Maybe it is to go on an active holiday, get back in to the gym, finish that DIY project or do a mini-triathlon?
Are you hampered by your niggly knee affecting your running, a sore back preventing you from chasing after the grandkids, or the dodgy shoulder limiting those overhead tennis shots?
Here are some basic tips for getting back in to exercise after a break:
- Start slow and small, going from “zero to hero” often causes injury
- Have a day off between training the same muscles to allow for recovery
- If you are a runner, go to a running specialist shop for gait analysis and footwear advice for your new shoes
- When working out – always balance your muscles. Work opposing muscle groups to balance your body- for example, if you work your chest muscles a lot make sure you work your back too.
- If you have muscle, joint or tendon pain that doesn’t go away in 48 hours it would be best to have it checked out. For acute injuries: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and diagnosis!
- To look after your back when lifting whether picking up a grandchild, or lifting a weight in the gym; draw your tummy in to activate stabilising muscles, bend your knees, keep the load close to your body and keep your back straight
- Your body is a system of systems, eating well and sleeping well and physiotherapy can help recovery and to help you move better.
